Microsoft has suggested a few tweaks to Windows 11’s security settings that could help PC gamers achieve smoother frame rates.

In this blog post, Microsoft provides instructions on how to turn off 2 features that provide stronger security for PCs using Windows 11 and thus better performance in games, but also says that disabling these functions will make your system more vulnerable to attacks.

The features in question are Memory Integrity (Windows Security, Kernel Isolation) and Virtual Machine Platform (under Windows Features) known as VMP. Both are simple switches that you can turn off if you wish.

“As part of ongoing testing and user feedback, Microsoft has seen that in certain scenarios and certain configurations of gaming devices, there may be a performance impact with Memory Integrity and VMP turned on,” Microsoft says.

The company also observes: “Gamers who want to prioritize performance have the option to turn these features off while gaming and turn them back on when the game is over. However, if turned off, their devices may be vulnerable to threats.”

As Microsoft has made clear, Memory Integrity ensures that all installed drivers are fully signed and trusted, helping to block one of the ways malicious code injects can be used by malicious people.
