Intel has officially confirmed that the BIOS source code of the 12th generation Alder Lake processors has been leaked to the internet and copies are available on sites like 4chan and Github. It is stated that such leaks can potentially reveal bugs that can be exploited in Intel’s hardware.
Intel rewards those who find vulnerabilities
The resulting leak consists of a 6GB file containing tools and code for creating and optimizing BIOS/UEFI images. Despite this leak, Intel states that they believe that the information leaked to the internet will not cause any security vulnerability.
For users who are wondering what BIOS is, we can explain BIOS as follows: BIOS introduces all other hardware to the processor in order as soon as the computer is turned on. It determines the basic communication protocols of the hardware. It allows the startup items of the operating system to be loaded from any drive.
While Intel did not provide detailed information about where the leak came from, it only said that it was made by a third-party person. Technology giants have been encountering many such attacks lately. NVIDIA also suffered a potential cyberattack in February. The company had to shut down some of its services for certain segments after the attack.
Intel, on the other hand, distributes various rewards to people who find security vulnerabilities in the source code in order to prevent such situations. The program, which the company calls Project Circuit Breaker, gives various monetary rewards to users who find vulnerabilities. Depending on how serious the problem found is, Intel can award between $500 and $100,000 per bug.
While the number of cyber attacks is increasing day by day, companies are trying to improve their security systems day by day. So what do you think about the leaked source codes of Intel Alder Lake processors? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
