The US announced on Friday new export controls that include the addition of new licensing requirements for certain advanced, high-performance computing chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, as well as products to be used in a supercomputer or for semiconductor development.

Speaking on the matter, Mao Ning, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, criticized the US decision to tighten export controls, which would make it harder for China to acquire and manufacture advanced computing chips.

Continuing his words, Ning continued, “Out of the need to maintain sci-tech hegemony, the US is abusing export control measures to maliciously thwart and suppress Chinese companies.” said.

Tensions rise between the US and China over semiconductor technology

US-China relations have deteriorated in recent years due to technology and security issues. While the US has implemented a series of measures and restrictions designed to prevent China from acquiring chip technology, China has set aside billions of dollars to invest in semiconductor manufacturing.

Tensions have also affected semiconductor companies in the US and globally that export or manufacture chips in China. Semiconductor companies like Nvidia and AMD saw a 40 percent drop in their stock prices last year.
