The first 14 articles of the bill, which includes regulations on social media and internet journalism, known as the social media law, were accepted at the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The other articles of the bill, which consists of 40 articles in total, will be discussed on Tuesday, October 11 at 15.00.
What are the accepted articles in the social media law?
The accepted articles include regulations for internet news sites and press cards. The proposal of the article, which imposes a prison sentence on social media posts, has not been discussed yet.
The date when the news on the news sites was first added and the next update dates will be displayed to the reader at the top of the content. Sites that do not comply with the publication stop order will be penalized by the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor.
The contents of the news sites will be kept for 2 years in a correct and complete manner, in order to be delivered to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office when necessary.
Among the accepted articles of the said bill, there are regulations regarding the press card application method, press card type, press card authorization and application conditions. Internet news sites can also apply for a press card. Press card applications will be made to the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey Communications Department. Applications will be evaluated by the Press Card Commission, which will consist of 19 members.
