Our life source water is sold in plastic bottles of almost all brands with a uniform design. In today’s article, we will explain the reasons for this design, which we see especially in 0.5 liter water bottles.
Of course, there is no question of manufacturers being lazy to make a different design or anything else. But there are many reasons for concave and convex design. Now let’s take a closer look at this design that makes our lives easier, even though we are not aware of it.
Small indentations have many other functions that we do not know much about.
There are many reasons for the inner and convex design of pet bottles. Chief among these (as many of us know or guess) is that we can hold the bottle more comfortably. A flat bottle can slip out of our hands, especially when our hands are wet. Thanks to the water design, which increases the friction force and our fingers enter the small knuckles, the bottle does not slip easily from our hands. However, as we said, this is not the only reason.
However, when plastic bottles are exposed to heat or cold, they expand or sublimate more thanks to their indented structure. Manufacturers, who want the design of the bottles to be intact, also take precautions against deformations that may occur in the bottle with these indentations. The reason why we do not see this design on some bottles is that they are made of a thicker plastic or a different design is wanted to be presented to the users.
Is that all?
Of course not that much. About 400 tons of plastic are thrown into the environment every day. Unfortunately, most of these wastes are made of plastic bottles. While the design of the bottles provides ease of use functionally, it also contains an important detail for recycling.
The recessed and protruding design makes it much easier to shrink bottles from above and below. Of course, in this way, a great convenience is provided when recycling. At the same time, thanks to this design, we can shrink the size of the bottle in a place where we cannot see garbage, and we can put it in our bag or pocket until we find garbage.
So why are the bottoms like that?
The plastic from which the bottle will be made is poured into a container and shaped. The protrusion at the bottom of the casting mold causes excess plastic to remain at the bottom of the bottle. Even if this shrunken plastic piece is cut, a point-like appearance remains.
This is one of the main reasons for this shape found under plastic bottles. However, the reason for the recesses extending to the sides is different. These are designed to make the bottle stand firmly on the ground and look more aesthetic.
