A new image from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) shows Neptune’s eight moons and four rings, two of which have not been seen for over 30 years.

The most prominent features of Neptune’s atmosphere in the image are a series of bright spots representing high-altitude methane ice clouds in the planet’s southern hemisphere. According to NASA, such clear images of the planet have been taken for the first time in 30 years.

In the new images, Neptune does not appear as blue as in previous images. More specifically, the thin line of luminosity surrounding the planet’s equator is thought to be a visual indicator of the global atmospheric circulation that powers Neptune’s winds and storms. In the photo we see seven of Neptune’s 14 known moons: Galatea, Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Proteus, Larissa and Triton.
Experts state that the photos will help scientists reveal the history of Neptune’s formation. “It’s been thirty years since we last saw these faint, dusty rings, and it’s the first time we’ve seen them in infrared,” said Neptune expert scientist Heidi Hammel. she said.
