When Apple first introduced the iPhone 14, it explained that the new thermal management system would make it easier to remove the rear glass without messing with more of the case. Now, the work of the repair experts at iFixit to disassemble the device shows that this is true and how easy it is to repair the phone, despite the insanely high repair costs announced. But this does not apply to iPhone 14 models.
Replacing the back glass on iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and older iPhone designs required more expertise than some phone repair professionals could provide. As iFixit notes, the “easiest” method involved a laser cutter and scraping off shards of glass with a razor blade. The site says that repairing the rear window is “not really a viable process for a fix yourself application.”
On the iPhone 14, the back glass is fixed with two screws, a connector, and some glue. There are no other parts. The windshield is likewise attached with just two screws. iFixit describes this level of simplicity and accessibility as “incredible,” and the photos it shares of how easy it looks to disassemble and repair support this idea.
It’s worth noting that Samsung’s Android phones, like the iPhone 14 Pro, are similarly difficult to repair and require extensive tools and knowledge.
