According to a report published by 1inch last week, vanity addresses suffered from a vulnerability that allowed hackers to create private addresses.
Hacker Stole $3.3M From Multiple Ethereum Addresses
According to Etherscan’s on-chain data, a hacker stole a total of $3.3 million from multiple Ethereum vanity addresses created through Profanity. Anonymous security analyst ZachXBT wrote on his Twitter account that $ 3.3 million was stolen.
Vanity addresses are special addresses that can contain characters and numbers. These addresses can be created using specific applications. One of them is Profanity. In a report published by decentralized exchange (DEX) 1inch last week, it was stated that vanity accounts created using Profanity are not secure. However, the security issue highlighted by 1inch was not fixed in time to prevent an exploit. Work on Profanity was discontinued a few years ago, according to the anonymous developer named Joghuse.
Noticing this before the 1inch report, Joghuse warned users about Profanity’s vulnerabilities and usage.
