Recently, there have been very concrete developments in space tourism. Blue Origin and SpaceX have a big share in this. These companies aim to transport wealthy people to space, as well as being an intermediary for NASA and other countries’ space studies.
The rocket that previously carried Jeff Bezos exploded in flight
An unexpected event occurred recently in Blue Origin, which continues its work on space. Blue Origin suffered a rocket malfunction during its flight on Monday, September 12. Fortunately, the flight was operated without a crew. A great disaster was avoided as no one was harmed by the wreckage of the rocket.
It appeared to be climbing normally on stage with the New Shepard rocket taking off from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch facility. The suborbital rocket, which has successfully performed 6 crewed and 17 uncrewed flights to the edge of space since 2015, encountered a problem after a while.
About 9 kilometers above the surface and with a speed of more than 1,100 km/h, a large flame suddenly erupted from the rocket in the 65th second of the mission. Afterwards, it is seen that the rocket was shaken by a big explosion. The crew capsule, which was activated in this process, escaped from the explosion thanks to the emergency escape system.
Broadcasting the launch of the rocket live, Blue Origin ended the broadcast approximately 45 seconds after the explosion. It was recorded that the crew capsule crashed into the West Texas Desert about 5 minutes later with its parachutes opened.
The Blue Origin team is investigating what caused the New Shepard rocket, which had already made 23 successful flights, to explode. Blue Origin had previously taken many people to the edge of space, including the owner of the company, Jeff Bezos, with this rocket.
Although this situation is frightening, we guess that the safe separation of the crew capsule from the rocket has created great relief for future Blue Origin passengers. If you want to see the explosion, you can watch the video from 1.29:48.
