The company behind Ethereum Name Services (ENS) has sued GoDaddy for the sale of a web domain name.

True Names Ltd. According to a lawsuit filed by GoDaddy, it incorrectly sold the eth.link domain name to a third party. Virgil Griffith, who is serving a prison sentence following his conviction earlier this year, said it was a breach of contract.

Lawsuit From The Company Behind Ethereum Name Services

The complaint was filed with the U.S. District Court of Arizona. Dynadot and Manifold Finance were also involved in the complaint, along with GoDaddy. True Names Ltd. is represented in the lawsuit by the law firm Crowell & Moring LLP.

The ENS service offers various names that can replace Ethereum wallet addresses. The company uses eth.link to allow the use of crypto addresses in web browsers. This was the domain name that ENS had registered with GoDaddy.

While the company uses the eth.link domain name to run its operations, it was stated in the complaint that this address was first registered in 2018 by former employee Griffith.

Griffith later made headlines for violating North Korean sanctions. He was sentenced to 63 months in prison after the incident.

True Names stated that it did not renew its domain name in July 2022 in the first place due to Griffith’s imprisonment. However, it was emphasized that during the additional period after the expiration of the domain name, it was re-registered on behalf of True Names by a service called easyDNS.

The company later stated that GoDaddy sold the domain name to Dynadot on September 3 without informing them. Plaintiffs who wanted to reach GoDaddy after this incident stated that they could not get a response to their demands.
