The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has fined Instagram a record 405 million euros for violating the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Details of the decision will be made public next week.

The highest fine ever imposed on Instagram owner Meta was for violating the privacy of child users between the ages of 13 and 17, including by posting children’s email addresses and phone numbers.
Companies owned by Meta are in the grip
Previously, WhatsApp, which was also under the umbrella of Meta, was fined 225 million euros and Facebook 17 million euros. The Irish Data Protection Commission is also preparing at least six more investigations into companies owned by Meta.
A Meta spokesperson, who made a statement on the subject, said that Instagram plans to appeal the penalty. He also stated that the penalty is related to the old privacy settings they updated a while ago, and they have since introduced many new features to keep young people safe and their information private.
