Some information of Samsung users leaked
Samsung sent a notification to its users in the US via email on Friday. It is stated that the mail from Samsung USA was sent to the relevant persons with the heading “An important notification regarding customer information”. Accordingly, the information of some Samsung users has reached third parties.
Informing its users about the issue, the Korean manufacturer states that the security breach occurred in July. Stating that they started an investigation on August 4, Samsung seems to have waited until September to make a notification.
Before making this announcement, Samsung may have wanted to make sure what kind of data security was breached first. It is stated that the company is also following such a path to ensure exactly who is affected by this situation. Samsung gave the following statements in the e-mail it sent to users on the subject:
In late July 2022, unauthorized persons leaked information from some of Samsung’s US systems. On or near August 4, through our ongoing investigation, we determined that the personal information of certain customers was affected.
We have taken measures to ensure the security of affected systems and are engaged with a leading external cybersecurity firm and are in coordination with law enforcement. We want to assure our customers that the issue did not affect their Social Security numbers or credit and debit card numbers, but in some cases it may have affected information such as name, contact and demographic information, date of birth and product registration information. Affected information may vary for each relevant customer.
The email sent directs customers to Samsung’s security response center home page, which contains contact information for major US credit bureaus. The company also warns customers to keep track of any unusual activity on their credit reports, although their social security or credit card numbers don’t appear to have been affected.
