However, in the near future Apple may allow its own Wallet app to be deleted. Well what does it mean? In other words, the company may allow iPhone and iPad users to not only uninstall the app from their device’s home screen, but also completely uninstall the Wallet app.
Apple’s Wallet app is a system app, and neither iOS nor iPadOS currently allow it to be uninstalled. In other words, it comes installed in the operating system and cannot be removed. Users can only uninstall the app from their home screen, but the Wallet app remains in the App Library. This situation looks set to change in the near future. So why is Apple considering doing such a thing?
It’s not entirely clear why Apple would allow users to uninstall the Wallet app, which would negatively impact the use of Apple Pay. However, the company is said to be trying to circumvent the legal disputes of the European Union. In other words, Apple finds the solution to give up the Wallet application to avoid legal problems. Because last May, the EU criticized Apple for limiting the iPhone’s NFC technology to its own payment platform.
The EU claims that Apple monopolizes a core technology. On the other hand, Google offers access to NFC technology on Android smartphones. Thus, we may also see Apple Pay working with Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox web browsers soon. This could enable users to continue paying via Apple Pay without the Wallet app.
