A few months ago, Instagram made changes to its sensitive content filters, changing the existing tags to “More”, “Standard” and “Less”. With this change, users can better understand the filters and choose the most suitable option for them.
Instagram takes new measures for the safety of young people
By default, the sensitive content filter of Instagram accounts comes as “Standard”. However, with the innovations made, this situation will change for users under the age of 16. The social media app has announced that it will automatically set the sensitivity filter to the most restrictive “Less” for new users under the age of 16.
This setting will apply to the Explore section, as well as Search, Reels, Recommended accounts, Stream Suggestions, and all services offered by Instagram. With the change, it is aimed to prevent young people from encountering potentially sensitive content or accounts that publish such content.
While making such a decision for new users, Instagram will ask young people who are already using the social media application to update their privacy and security settings. The popular app will also ask teens to review settings like “control who can re-share their content, who can communicate with them, what content they can see, and how they can manage their time on Instagram.”
Instagram has recently added features focused on the safety of young people. The company introduced Amber Alerts for app in early June. Through this service, details of a young person in distress reach specific users as a warning post.
The company has also launched age verification in the US. From now on, young people who sign up for the platform will need to verify their age. These initiatives of Instagram are very important in this period when social media is especially dangerous for young people.
