Scientists have been working on the fight against alcoholism for a long time. Among these studies, there are different methods such as various therapy techniques, alternative medicine methods, drug treatments. The latest of these studies reveals that a substance in hallucinatory mushrooms may offer the solution.

This substance, called psilocybin, is normally found in hallucinatory mushrooms. According to recent studies, this substance can play an important role in ending the habit of drinking, especially when supplemented with oral therapy.

Effective with therapy support

In the study, published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, people with alcohol dependence were divided into two groups. One group was given Psilocybin drugs, while another group was given Benadryl, which has nothing to do with addiction. Afterwards, the changes in the habits of the two groups were examined.

Researchers used drug therapy in addition to talk therapy. The participants, who first entered 4 sessions of therapy, were then given two doses of medication. Afterwards, four more sessions of therapy were carried out. After the second therapy period, the participants took two more doses of medication and then attended the final four-session therapy sessions.

At the end of the 32-week period, alcoholism behavior decreased in both groups, but this decrease was much higher in the drug user group. While the cure rate was 83% in the psilocybin group, it was 51% in the placebo group. The proportion of people who completely stopped drinking alcohol was 48% in the first group, while it was 24% in the placebo group.
