Congressman Tom Emmer seeks a response from Janet Yellen for the Treasury Department’s sanctions on Tornado Cash.
Tom Emmer, a Republican congressman and crypto advocate, reacted to the Tornado Cash sanctions on Twitter.
Congressman Awaits Response
The US Treasury Department sanctioned Tornado Cash and stated that more than $7 billion had been laundered on the protocol since 2019.
Emmer demanded that the regulator clarify its actions and used the following statements:
“These sanctions are unique. Because it was applied to a code that enables privacy, not to an individual or an organization.”
Emmer’s concerns address several issues raised by the crypto industry following sanctions targeting smart contract addresses. Emmer is the co-chairman of the Congressional Blockchain Group and is known as a longtime crypto advocate.
Emma added:
“How does OFAC plan to support the appeals process for sanctioned addresses that have no chance to appeal against OFAC? Given that Tornado Cash will remain an anonymizing technology on Ethereum, who or what entity can OFAC hold responsible for controlling Tornado Cash blockchain contracts?”
