Microsoft started distributing the said update package on August 9, and soon after, user complaints reporting various problems followed. It later turned out that installing the patch broke the Windows 10 sound system in some cases, which could cause various issues such as sound stuttering when playing audio.

Waiting for Microsoft to fix the problem

He states that the issue can affect not only the most recent version of Windows 10, but also older builds including Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 10 (2004). Microsoft acknowledged the problem and explained that installing versions KB5015878 (released in July) and KB5016616 may break the audio drivers.

Users are advised to update their sound drivers before installing the said update. However, if the patch is already installed, you can try using Windows’ built-in troubleshooter or reinstalling the sound drivers. Microsoft is expected to release a cumulative update to fix sound issues shortly.
