The Nobel Prizes, which have been given regularly since 1901 by the association founded by Alfred Nobel and are known as the most prestigious awards in the world, have started to find their owners for 2021. One of the first awards announced in this context was the Nobel Prize in Medicine. This year, scientists named Özlem Türeci and Uğur Şahin, who found the estimated mRNA-based coronavirus vaccine for everyone, but nothing like that happened. The award was given to two scientists, David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian.
Scientists, one from Lebanon and the other from the USA, conducted a study on the somatosensory system, and within the scope of this study, they were able to discover temperature and contact receptors. Experts named these receptors PIEZ01 and PIEZ02 for touch and TRPV1 for temperature. The results of this discovery enabled the two scientists to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine and $1.15 million.
With the discovery made, it was understood how people adapted to the world
The Nobel Committee made statements about the work of scientists they deemed worthy of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. In the statements made by the committee, it was stated that thanks to the studies in question, it was understood how people adapted to life in the world, and the development of treatments for many diseases, including chronic pain, was achieved with the discovered receptors.
