Microblogging site Twitter, one of the most popular social media platforms, has been fighting against bots for a long time. Especially when Elon Musk decided to buy the platform and then gave up, he said “I was deceived” and complained that there were too many bots on the platform.

A new step from the Twitter front will offer users a new way to separate bot accounts. According to reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter will roll out the “verified phone number” hashtag.

Blue click is not enough, verified number is also needed

To put it simply, users who have verified their phone number will see a gray “verified phone number” label appear on their Twitter profile. This tag, which will be located in the bio, just above the followers and followed information, will be gray.

Through this hashtag, Twitter aims to enable people to verify their phone numbers and emails, making their accounts both safer and more authentic. Of course, not all bots are bad, so it is stated that there will be a tag for bots accounts as well. In addition, information such as a verified phone number makes it easy to both protect accounts and retrieve stolen accounts.

On the other hand, giving the phone number means risking the phone number in a sense. More recently, the names, phone numbers and email addresses of 5.4 million Twitter users were leaked by a hacker. In 2020, verification blue ticks were used by scammers to hack Bitcoin.

It is not yet known when the new feature will be available, whether only the account holder or all users can see the phone number verified. Although it is currently possible to find whether the phone numbers in the accounts are verified or not, in the analysis tab, there will be no need for such a process thanks to the new feature.
