WhatsApp’s new app for Windows no longer requires your phone to be connected to send, receive and pair messages. According to an update on WhatsApp’s site, the beta version of the renewed Windows application is now available and can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
Windows users previously had to download WhatsApp’s web-based desktop application or access the messaging service from their web browser. As WhatsApp explains, the new app will make the app faster and more responsive as it runs natively on Windows.
The redesigned WhatsApp has a slightly cleaner interface compared to the previous version of the app, but there isn’t a big difference. We can say that the biggest change is that you no longer have to keep your phone online to synchronize messages between your phone and the desktop app. According to WhatsApp, a native app for macOS is currently being worked on.
WhatsApp’s multi-device feature is now fully available and is out of beta. With this feature, it is possible to connect up to four devices to your WhatsApp account without the need for your phone, while maintaining end-to-end encryption security.
Back in April, WABetaInfo found a screenshot from the beta version of WhatsApp on Android, showing that the platform may soon add multi-device support for tablets. Currently, WhatsApp only lets you connect computers to your account, so adding support for tablets (or maybe an additional phone) makes sense.
However, there are some limitations to using connected devices. For example, if you use an iPhone as your primary device, you cannot clear or delete chats. You also cannot send messages with link previews from WhatsApp web, message or call someone using a “very old version” of WhatsApp, and also view their live location.
