Claiming to be more reliable compared to other messaging applications, Signal is at risk of a new vulnerability. Hackers who attacked the communications company Twilio last week managed to steal the numbers of Signal users. The numbers of nearly 2,000 Signal users were exposed.
1900 number exposed due to Signal vulnerability
Encrypted instant messaging service Signal fell victim to a hack attempt last week. The platform, which uses the Twilio communication tool to send verification SMS to phone numbers, was affected by the attack on Twilio. The company admitted that the numbers of 1,900 Signal users were exposed.
Explaining that it was affected by the attack on Twilio, Signal said that a very small percentage of its user base was exposed, however. In addition, no user’s personal data such as message history, contact lists, profile information, blocked users were disclosed.
The hackers who attacked Twilio last week seem to have affected more than one company. Preferring Twilio’s servers to send verification messages to users, Signal stated that they talked to the authorities about the latest incident.
Signal also did not neglect to warn users. Users who want to secure their account may choose to enable registration lock. For this, you should follow the Signal Settings > Account > Registration Lock path.
Twilio, on the other hand, said that as a result of the attack, the data of 125 users was accessed for a limited time. Still, the customer assured that their passwords, authentication codes and API keys were secure.
