A Super Mario Bros. The speed record holder accomplished the seemingly impossible by breaking his own “impossible” world record in the classic NES game.

Twitch streamer Niftski wrapped Super Mario Bros. on Sunday in 4:54 and 798ms. This time beats the previous record of 4:54 and 881 ms, which he achieved last December, by 3 ms, or five frames.

Niftski is the first Super Mario Bros. to complete the game in less than 4:55. It was his “speedrunner,” a feat considered nearly impossible for gamers. For comparison, the first game under five minutes was completed in 2010. It took 11 years to beat this time by 5 more seconds.

An absolute perfect game completion time is rated at 4:54 and 265 ms, which was achieved in a tool-assisted trial. This means that all controller inputs are programmed and designed to be optimized in a way that humans cannot copy.

Niftski said this time will likely be the last race that does not include a new tactic at the second level of the 4th world, which he calls “Lightning 4-2”. This little trick can shorten the game completion time by a few milliseconds, but to achieve it requires incredibly timely orders…
