Small 8-legged creatures that are a phobia for some, aka spiders, have many wonderful features. With a new study, another feature of these little creatures that is similar to us (or at least thought to be) has emerged.
It turned out that the jumping spider species examined in an experiment conducted in Germany may be dreaming in their sleep, just like humans. Let’s take a look at the details of the experiment together.
Spiders also enter the REM sleep stage
As you know, in human sleep there is a process called ‘REM sleep’. REM stands for ‘Rapid Eye Movement’. When people enter this process in their sleep, this can be observed from the outside, because the pupils of the eyes move under the eyelid.
REM sleep is the stage of sleep in which people dream. Researchers studying jumping spiders at the University of Konstanz in Germany found that these species also enter the REM sleep stage, just like humans.
Of course, this doesn’t necessarily prove that spiders dream just like us. However, another factor that scientists have observed greatly strengthens this possibility: leg contractions. People often experience various contractions in their limbs while dreaming. Researchers have observed that jumping spiders also experience similar limb spasms.
So the researchers’ thinking is that spiders are most likely dreaming. If spiders are indeed dreaming, what do you think they are seeing? Please do not forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
