Sea Turtles Are Going Female Because of Global Warming

Scientists have announced that almost all newborn sea turtles are female due to global warming. This puts the future of the species at risk.

Due to global warming, the balance in the world is getting worse day by day. One of the creatures affected by this situation is sea turtles. These creatures are adversely affected by hot weather in a very different way.

According to the results of the researchers, the vast majority of sea turtles born in recent years are females. In fact, no sea turtle eggs have hatched a male in Florida in the past four years.

Males disappear as temperatures rise

Making a statement on the subject, Bette Zirkelbach, director of the Sea Turtle Hospital in Florida, said, “The scary thing was that last summer was Florida’s hottest summer on record,” while scientists were examining the newly hatched eggs and they could not find any male offspring. No male puppies have been born in the state in the past 4 years.

This situation also poses risks for the future of sea turtles. The continuation of the species is currently at great risk due to habitat destruction and poaching.

According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, if sea turtle eggs stay below a certain temperature during the incubation period, male hatchlings are born, and females are born if they stay above a certain temperature. In case of temperature fluctuations, the sex of the offspring to be born is determined randomly. The trouble is that the temperatures don’t fluctuate much, but rather constantly moving upwards.

On the other hand, the risk of future conversion to a single-sex species is not the only threat to sea turtles. The beaches are getting hotter. This means that sea turtles die before they can even hatch.
