We are all used to adapting comics to movies or TV series. Wherever we saw a good idea, it was somehow related to the comics or a comic book adaptation. The situation is no different for Sandman, which will be Netflix’s most expensive series to date.

Sandman, released under the Vertigo label, DC’s sub-publishing house where it tells more complex and adult stories, was so good that it became a global phenomenon, changed the award criteria of prestigious awards, and initiated the birth of many new series and characters. Since its debut, it has been wondered how it would be if a series of the series was made. We will have our answer to this question soon.

Who is this Sandman?

In the early days of comics, DC publishing house created a hero in a green suit and gas mask on top of Batman’s success. Although comic book readers sympathized with this character named Sandman, the character was never overly popular. In the 90s, although this character did not appear in a few panels except for a few panels where he was a guest, he formed the basis of one of the greatest comics.

In the late 1980s DC decided to renew the Sandman character. For this job, they agreed with Neil Gaiman, whom we know from many works such as American Gods, The Graveyard Book, Stardust, Coraline, Children of Anansi. Actually, the story of the character we described in the previous paragraph was going to be told, but Gaiman came up with a completely different concept. With the management giving the green light, a brand new Sandman has emerged.

Get ready to meet Morpheus, the lord of dreams!

Sandman, the main character of the Sandman universe, is a member of the Endless (translated as “daimiler”) family. The family consists of seven siblings in total. These siblings are Destiny (Destiny), Death (Death), Dream (Dream, our main character), Destruction (Destruction), Desire (Desire), Despire (Despair), and Delirium (Madness – Used to be Delight). Of course, there is no blood relation between the characters, they take power from the area they represent and dominate that area.

Morpheus, who is usually a character with black hair and pale white skin, can actually take the shape he wants, take shape according to the expectations of the viewer. The powers of the nearly immortal character are both many and varied.

Sandman is called the story of stories. Indeed, the 75-issue comic book progresses like an anthology. In these stories, Sandman himself sometimes takes the position of a guest actor or a supporting character. As a result, an interesting series structure awaits us.

So what will be told in the show?

If we look at the trailer released by Netflix, we will see the characters and events that we saw in the first and second volumes of the comic in the first season. Thus, we will have the opportunity to get to know the characters we will encounter in the series properly.

The events, as we see in the trailer, will begin with the magician Roderick Burgess imprisoning Dream. Imprisoned in a glass for 70 years in the comics, Dream (played by Tom Sturridge) seeks revenge and his powerful personal belongings stolen from him when he is freed. Although we have summarized the story without giving the most surprises, the events are of course not that simple.

Lucienne, the butler of the Sandman in the dreamland, the protagonists of the first story Abel and Caine (Abel and Cain), Johanna Constantine, who took her place because Netflix couldn’t use John Constantine, Lucifer (Yes, the same character played by Tom Ellis, but this time Gwendoline Christie We’ll also get to know characters like Raven Matthew and Mervyn Pumpkinhead (voiced by Mark Hamill) in the first season.

We also see the Corinthian character played by Boyd Holbrook in the trailer. He’s a goggle-obsessed nightmare and lives on Earth as a fugitive. Probably this character will be in the final episode of the series. We will also see the characters Lyta Hall, Gilbert and Rose.

Sandman has a similar importance to Watchmen and V for Vendetta when we look at the history of comics in terms of its impact and weight. Let’s see if Netflix can successfully adapt this series to the screens.

Sandman will hit Netflix on August 5, 2022.
