After Facebook changed the company name to Meta, the metaverse rush started all over the world. Dozens of companies want to develop their own virtual world and companies want to take their place in these worlds. It turns out that the US military is also designing metaverse-like “photo-realistic” terrains and conducting exercises.
Metaverse developments in the US military are surprising
The US is bringing military work to the digital world under a program called the Synthetic Training Environment (STE). The US army, which has been simulating military tactics through action games for a long time, wants to combine the games in a single training environment.
Developed within the scope of the Synthetic Education Environment (STE) program, the metaverse is different from the virtual worlds of companies. Trying to create a 1:1 digital twin of the Earth, the US military also prepares the data in a photo-realistic way. In this way, the lands in the virtual world have the same view as on Earth.
Launched in 2017, the program is used for multiple purposes for the US military. These include developing strategy in any terrain of the world, conducting virtual training and training different military units in a single training environment.
Maria Gervais, Director of Combined Arms Center Training, made a statement on the subject and said that they prepared the soldiers for complex and operational environments. “We want our soldiers to enter the Synthetic Training Environment and learn with whom and on what terrain to fight,” he said in his statement.
Beyond the metaverses created for entertainment or commercial uses, military virtual worlds have become alarming. Although the US military says it uses the Earth’s 1:1 digital twin for simulation, it is thought to be used in daily education by 2030.
