German automobile giant BMW surprised with its new vehicle recall decision. Recalling its two electric models, the manufacturer seeks to avoid the risk of fatal accidents. Accordingly, the recalled two electric car families also pose a fire risk.
BMW vehicle recall decision and two affected electric car families
BMW, which has been successful in electric cars, is among the influential brands in the market after Tesla. In this sense, the brand, which has a significant market share, is on the verge of an important crisis. Although there are two electric car models affected by the vehicle recall, this decision soon resonated in the US market.
After the fires on the two troublesome car series, the 83 iX and i4, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has produced an advisory report on the matter.
Accordingly, the administration included the iX xDrive 50, iX M60, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 models in the list. In the list, the administration made some recommendations to users who own these vehicle models. Accordingly, the administration asked users not to charge vehicles and not leave them in closed interior spaces such as garages. In short, users should not use these models.
BMW, on the other hand, immediately recalled these models, which caused problems in the USA, after this recommendation. These models are also available in many countries, including our country. However, for now, the BMW vehicle recall problem is battery-related. Accordingly, Samsung SDI battery cells in electric cars cause fires. The first problem appeared in the i4 eDrive model in April. However, after the problem escalated, BMW decided to recall all cars with this battery.
Accordingly, users with the aforementioned models affected by this major bug will receive a notification letter until September 19. In this sense, users will start returning vehicles according to the letter. With the decision of BMW to recall the vehicle, the batteries of the models in question will be replaced free of charge. However, it is unclear whether users will be given the right to exchange and return.
In recent years, automobile brands such as Toyota and Volkswagen have decided to recall vehicles for various reasons. Tesla, on the other hand, has not taken such a decision for now, despite all the battery fire news and accidents. Do you think these fire possibilities in the battery will cause problems in electric car sales? We are waiting your comments.
