The United States and Japan will jointly develop technologies for the mass production of 2 nanometer chips. According to the news in the Japanese economy newspaper Nikkei Asia, an R&D center will be opened in Japan by the end of the year within the framework of the partnership project with the USA.
Artificial intelligence market to reach $900 billion by 2026
In the future, the project will help companies from the two developed countries build stable supply chains and secure themselves against potential tensions between China and semiconductor industry leader Taiwan.
The R&D center will operate as part of a new research institute that will open its doors this year. Experts from the US National Semiconductor Technology Center will also take part in the joint project to be implemented.
Target to start production in 2025
Initially, researchers from both countries will focus on developing advanced chips based on 2 nm technology that will improve performance and reduce power consumption compared to existing solutions. The center is also expected to set up a prototype production line.
The ultimate goal of the project is to start mass production of advanced chips in Japan by 2025. Joint project plans were announced in May by Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
