Moving chip production to Taiwan-based TSMC with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Qualcomm announced last week that the new generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform will be released on November 15, 2022. Now, new details about the platform have been shared.
It will offer a 10 percent performance increase
According to WFFTech, Qualcomm will only place orders for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from TSMC. However, due to TSMC dedicating a large amount of capacity to the Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max chipsets, the new flagship platform will continue the 4nm process node used in Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
Qualcomm’s new chipset is expected to switch to a 1+2+2+3 configuration instead of the 1+3+4 chipset. However, the changed cluster will include a high-performance core codenamed Makalu (corresponding to Cortex-X3, Cortex-A715 and an updated Cortex-A510), two Makalu cores, two Matterhorn cores and three Klein R1 cores. Thus, significant gains in GPU performance and a 10 percent increase in overall chipset performance are expected.

In addition to a new CPU design, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will also host Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X70 5G modem. With the new modem, higher download speeds and energy savings of up to 60 percent are aimed.
