Slowing down Gigafactory operations due to Covid-19 quarantines and a semiconductor chip, Tesla is finally returning to the numbers it wants. Thanks to the new addition to the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory, Model 3 and Model Y production is expected to break records.
Shanghai Gigafactory will produce more than 1 million vehicles per year
Tesla is increasing its investments in the Shanghai Gigafactory. With the additions starting July 17, the Model Y and Model 3 will nearly double production capacity. Apart from this addition to the factory, it was also stated that its employees returned to the production areas.
Tesla China operations are expected to shift to three shifts. Accordingly, each shift will produce 500-600 vehicles and the daily number of Model 3s will reach 1000 to 1200 units. In addition, the daily capacity of Model Y production will increase to 2200 units. In other words, more than 3000 Tesla will leave the line daily.
It is estimated that the Shanghai production line produces 750,000 vehicles per year. Annual capacity is expected to increase from 1.1 million to 1.2 million units thanks to new additions to the Chinese factory. This figure is well above California’s production capacity of 650 thousand and Texas and Berlin’s 250 thousand.
There is also an increase in the number of job postings for Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory. Although the entire factory will be based on automation, it was stated that 15 employees from different sectors will be needed for the new additions. These additions to the production line are scheduled to be completed by August 7.
Deliveries are expected to accelerate with the increase in Model Y and Model 3 production in China. Tesla’s current Model 3 delivery time in China is 16-20 weeks; Model Y delivery time is listed as 10-14 weeks.
