US-based CO2Rail has demonstrated a way to capture CO2 in the air using existing trains. As part of the fight against climate change, the company will add special wagons to trains and store carbon dioxide as a liquid.

The developed system includes a wagon that captures carbon dioxide in the air using the energy from regenerative braking. Captured carbon dioxide is separated from the air, converted to liquid, and stored until discharged. CO2Rail’s technology offers the potential to scale at a cost of $50 per ton. This makes it commercially viable as well.
According to Peter Styring of the University of Sheffield, the technology developed will capture and store CO2 at low cost, and with special carriages each with an annual capacity of approximately 3,000 tons, the system will be able to deliver 0.45 gigatons by 2030, 2.9 gigatons by 2050 and It has the potential to reach 7.8 gigatons of annual productivity by 2075.

It was concluded from the calculations that each direct air capture vehicle could capture approximately 6 thousand tons of carbon dioxide from the air per year. It is also stated that each train can have more than one CO2Rail wagon, so that the trains can capture more CO2.
