Sony is facing a new class action lawsuit regarding a PS5 flaw that is said to cause games to crash. Illinois plaintiff Christina Trejo has filed a lawsuit after discovering that the PS5 is prone to shutting down completely during gameplay. Court documents state that the flaw “affects users’ ability to play video games and compromises the PS5’s primary function and overall use.”
As proof, the document cites a series of Amazon customer reviews and Reddit threads over the nearly two years that the PS5 has been on sale. The unifying issue of these complaints seems to be that the console randomly shuts down without warning during a game.
Perhaps Trejo’s biggest accusation is that Sony deliberately hid this issue and decided to sell the PS5s that way. If found guilty, Sony could be fined to cover the cost of these defects.
This latest lawsuit against Sony isn’t the first time a console manufacturer has gone to court for a defect. Previously, Nintendo was in court over the Switch’s Joy-Con dragging issue, which caused the Nintendo Switch’s bundled controllers to register movement on analog sticks even when they weren’t touched.
But in this latest case, it is not entirely correct to say that Sony has not disclosed information about the PS5 crashing error. As stated in the case’s own admission, Sony’s official support page states that consoles that shut down while playing games are eligible for repair if they’re under warranty.
Many players are reporting that they are experiencing this issue in more than one game.
