With the decrease in costs, the computer community gradually began to adopt SSD products. This naturally affects its biggest competitor HDD sales. HDD sales suffered a huge loss in the second quarter.

Big loss in HDD sales

According to the market research, HDD sales suffered a significant loss of 33 percent in the second half of the year. In total, around 45 million HDDs were sold, with a quarterly average of 162 million in 2010.

2.5-inch HDD sales were only able to reach 11 million, a 40 percent drop. Sales of 17 million were achieved in the consumer and desktop class, with a quarter-on-quarter decline of 30 percent. In addition to the end user, the demand in different sectors such as security cameras has decreased considerably.

The market leader, Seagate, experienced a decrease of 29 percent while selling around 20 million. Toshiba is in a decline of 40 percent with over 8 million sales. WD, on the other hand, was down about 33 percent, with sales of around 17 million.

Manufacturers continue to work on capacities of 20TB and above, as well as higher speeds. However, these are more of a server side concern. It is estimated that the HDD market will continue to bleed, especially with the effect of inflation.
