With its invasion of Ukraine in February, Russia was exposed to sanctions from western states and companies. Russia, which was also sanctioned by AMD and Intel in May, does not want the gaming industry to be affected by possible sanctions. In this direction, the government wants to develop a domestic game engine.
Russia does not want to be subject to the sanctions of Unreal and Unity
According to information from Reddit, Russia wants to develop its own game engine in case of losing access to the Unity and Unreal Engine game engines. Developers in the country have started conversations with the Russian Ministry of Digital Development.
During the meetings with the Ministry, the possibility of allocating funds from the state for the development of the game engine was also brought up, but Russia has not come to a definite decision on the matter. The possibility of re-development of projects under construction with a new game engine and the fact that game engines such as Unity/Unreal have a large ecosystem show how difficult a domestic game engine project can be. In addition, the government has not yet approved the domestic game engine project, as it is foreseen that AMD and Nvidia will not help Russian software development. However, Russia’s loss of access to Unreal and Unity engines will set the domestic game engine project in motion.
