The first all-civilian astronaut crew in history encountered an unexpected problem mid-month on their journey to orbit during SpaceX’s Insipariton4 mission. Elon Musk said that this problem was a problem with the toilet.
The cause of the problem was determined as a malfunction in the toilet fan. Where the astronauts received training on how to solve this problem was the flight itself. Jared Isaacman, one of the civilian astronauts, explained the events.
Toilet fan is broken:
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted on September 21 that the inspiration4 crew had “some difficulties” with the toilet. The problem in the toilet under the glass dome in the nose of the Crew Dragon vehicle was later resolved.
The toilets used in space travel are different from the toilets we use. For example, these toilets have a vacuum effect so waste goes where it needs to go. Otherwise, very unpleasant situations may arise in a gravity-free environment.
According to Isaacman’s statements, the vehicle’s alarms started to sound because the fan in the vehicle’s toilet was broken. The SpaceX team guided the astronauts on how to fix the problem, but frequent power outages made this process very difficult.
Alone in space:
Expressing that they have no communication with ground control in approximately 10 percent of the time they spend in orbit, Isaacman stated that they are very calm in this process. He also stated that although the conditions were difficult at first, they managed to fix the toilet fan.
Stating that they talked to NASA astronauts about going to the toilet in space before the trip, the astronaut added that they learned that it was difficult to go to the toilet in space and they had to be very kind to each other.
