Senate Intelligence Committee orders FTC to investigate TikTok
TikTok has recently been under intense pressure from the US for suspected privacy violations. After a period of tension, Democrat President Mark Warner and Republican Vice President Senator Marco Rubio took up the issue.
The Senate appealed to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The letter sent to FTC Chairman Lina Khan called for the immediate opening of the FTC investigation. TikTok may soon be under investigation. The senators included the following statements in their call letter.
We ask your agency to promptly initiate a Chapter 5 investigation based on blatant deception by TikTok and to coordinate this work with any national security or counterintelligence investigations that may be initiated by the US Department of Justice.
The pressure for TikTok actually started last week. The Federal Communications Board (FCC) in America had warned Apple and Google to “remove TikTok from your stores” and was asked to return until July 8th. All eyes are now on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
