Despite criticism stemming from a series of transitions, Cardano remains in the top spot by market cap. After the network gains smart contract capability, the number of active applications is also increasing rapidly. In this article, let’s take a detailed look at Vasil hardfork, which is the expected rise for Cardano (ADA).

Cardano Vasil hardfork removes barriers to platform performance

Cardano, the largest PoS Blockchain for decentralized applications, is preparing for an eccentric upgrade in its codebase. The upcoming hardfork is named after mathematician Vasil Stoyanov Dabov. So what is changing in Vasil?

  • Vasil hardfork is the most anticipated upgrade in Cardano since smart contracts activation with Alonzo.
  • Vasil hardfork is expected to be released in the early 3rd quarter of 2022.
  • The Hardfork agenda includes four Cardano Improvement Proposals (CIPs): CIP-31, CIP-32, CIP-33 and CIP-40.
  • The updates will substantially rethink data processes in Cardano (ADA), making it more resource-optimized and developer-friendly.
  • Additionally, the improvements will boost the progress of Plutus, a Cardano-specific programming language.

By the way, Valis was released on testnet today. Official announcement:

The largest Proof-of-Stake network

Cardano is different from other mining (PoW) cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and most other legacy blockchains secure the network with PoW. However, Cardano is one of the most established projects that does not use mining with more energy efficient proof of stake. Also, stakers receive periodic rewards as ADA for their contributions. Additionally, pools can incentivize their supporters with additional rewards on their local presence.

Cardano’s promising dApps ecosystem

Just like Ethereum, Polygon and BNB Chain, Cardano (ADA) is suitable for running all kinds of decentralized applications (dApps). Cardano’s ecosystem has its own programming language, Plutus (based on Haskell), and a low-code tool for DeFi development called Marlowe.

By mid-June 2022, Cardano (ADA) was used as a technical platform by more than 1,000 dApps. Most of them belong to the NFTs segment: Cardano (ADA), markets, NFT collections, etc. As such, Cardano’s dApps ecosystem is almost as large as Polygon’s in terms of net active protocols.

Meet Vasil hardfork: The most important update since the activation of smart contracts

Cardano’s (ADA) upgrade announcements often make headlines in Web3 media. However, Vasil’s hard fork is special: it caters to the needs of the dApps ecosystem that has grown rapidly in the bearish recession.

Basic knowledge

Vasil was first announced in early 2022 as a response to the growing popularity of Cardano’s smart contracts in dApps. With Vasil hardfork, the process of recruiting dApps will be easier than ever. It is also set to make Cardano’s operations faster and cheaper.

The updates available in Vasil harddfork (Cardano Improvement Recommendations or CIPs) will reduce the throughput, making their execution more resource-optimized. When the Vasil update is released, Cardano’s (ADA) DDoS protection will be upgraded while the transaction logic will be optimized.

CIP-31: Reference Inputs

The CIP-31 implementation is set to introduce so-called “Reference Inputs”. This mechanism addresses the drawbacks of the EUTXO ledger design to increase the scalability and resource efficiency of Cardano (ADA) transactions.

With the CIP-31, there is no need to “spend” to see the transaction output. In turn, it allows users to see data on the Blockchain without all the scope of operation involved in spending and regenerating UTXOs.

This CIP will improve the performance of on-chain data providers and save network resources.

CIP-32: Inline Date

When CIP-32 is enabled, a new type of data unit, i.e. “inline data”, will be added to the process outputs instead of summaries of data. As with the previous CIP, it will facilitate communication between various actors in Cardano’s dApps ecosystem and make it more convenient for both senders and receivers of Cardano transactions.

Technically, it would reduce the volume of data that consensus participants would have to control to interact with it. Therefore, decentralized applications will easily adjust their designs to new upgrades to make these operational logics more efficient.

CIP-33: Reference Scripts

CIP-33 upgrade affects Plutus scripts. These scripts are actually short software programs that are not stored on the Blockchain. Therefore, each time this or that script is used, the process allowing its use must provide the entire script as part of the process.

When CIP-33 is enabled, “individual scripts” are replaced by “universal scripts”. Transactions with “universal scripts” will be much smaller and therefore Blockchain will process them more easily.

CIP-40: Collateral Outputs

Finally, the CIP-40 is ready to overcome the hurdles of the Cardano (ADA) network’s DDoS resistance. Margin outputs are adjusted to improve the transaction verification process. Currently, if transaction verification fails for this or that transfer, the sender forfeits the collateral. When CIP-40 is implemented, DDoS protection will be more inclusive and equitable. It also eliminates the need for wallets to put collateral, which is considered a legacy DDoS protection method.

Cardano Vasil hard fork roadmap

Like major upgrades in modern networks, Vasil came to the fore with no firm date set. Starting late June 2022, Cardano developers are stress testing Vasil mechanisms on testnets. As we quoted as Kriptokoin.com, Cardano’s Vasil is expected to be released on the mainnet at the end of July 2022.

As a result

Vasil is the most important update for Cardano (ADA) since the smart contracts functionality was enabled with Alonzo. It includes four CIPs that handle data transfer logics and some operations with Plutus scripts. Vasil hardfork is expected to improve development experience and dApps operations.
