Berlin will heat with its own heat storage tank instead of Russian gas

It was recently reported by TechXplore that Germany has created a giant thermos in Berlin to heat homes during the winter months. The tower-shaped heat storage tank, approximately 45 meters high, made by Vattenfall, will be able to store 50 million liters of water. The tank will be able to keep the water warm for up to 13 hours and meet most of Berlin’s hot water needs during the summer months, and 10 percent during the winter months. The facility, which is planned to be operational in 2023, cost 52 million dollars.

The structure will operate using backup electrical energy from wind and solar panels in Germany. In addition, the facility will act as a giant battery during periods when the demand for renewable energy is exceeded. “It’s a huge thermos that helps us store heat when we don’t need it, and then we can release it when we need to use it,” said Tanja Wielgoss, head of the thermal unit at German power company Vattenfall. explained in his words.
