The exorbitant prices seen in the markets have become the subject of great debate, especially in the last few months. The products that are sold for more than their worth and the products whose weight is not reduced but whose price is not reduced are the ones that draw the most attention in this regard. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a statement on this issue last week.

Making statements before his departure to the United States, Erdogan said that they would eliminate the price difference in chain markets as quickly as possible, that they would continue the inspections seriously, and that he would even deal with this issue himself. Now, the President of the Confederation of Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESK) has made statements on the subject.

The weight should be written in a way that the consumer can see and a standard should be set in this regard:

In his statements on the subject, TESK Chairman Bendevi Palandöken drew attention to the products whose weight was reduced but the price was not reduced. Stating that citizens should do their own inspections and not delay in their complaints to the Ministry of Commerce, Palandöken’s explanations are as follows:

“In many items, a hidden raise is reflected to the citizens. Police teams carry out inspections, but the citizen must first check his own price and weight. We must be vigilant against these unethical situations that directly affect the markets and our pockets. Our artisans cannot intervene in any way other than buying and selling the products. Despite this, there is a perception as if the products sold in the shopkeepers’ shops are being cheated in this way. Care should be taken in this regard when shopping at chain markets. However, with a legal regulation, the weight of food products should be written in a way that the consumer can see. Weight standard should be introduced. Even if the manufacturer has made changes, it must be reflected in the consumer and prices. ”

It is not yet clear what will be done in practice, but chain markets that offer such misleading prices seem to have a hard time.
