As the conflict between social media platforms continues to intensify day by day, an interesting directive came from Facebook to its employees today. In the directive sent to its employees, the company instructed the platform’s flow page to look like TikTok.
In a directive sent in April and shared with The Verge the other day, Facebook’s Meta manager Tom Alison wanted people to start recommending posts heavily regardless of who they came from, rather than prioritizing posts from accounts they follow. In addition, it was desired that the separate applications of Messenger and Facebook should be reunited.
The company is pursuing ‘discovery engine’ development
Contacting Tom Alison following the said directive, The Verge obtained important information directly from Alison. Alison explained that Facebook’s new goal is to develop a ‘discovery engine’. This term was also mentioned at the last investor meeting by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Alison also admitted that the company was late in recognizing TikTok’s competitiveness. Alison shared that one of her biggest misconceptions about TikTok is about the feature of showing posts from friends in a separate tab. Alison said:
“What we didn’t fully embrace or see was how ‘social’ this format could be.”
So what will change in Facebook from now on?
Facebook application will start to include Stories and Reels videos at the top of its home page after this stage. Beneath these will be Facebook and Instagram posts, which are featured by Facebook’s ‘discovery engine’. In addition, it was stated that the messages will appear at the top right of the application.
