A new report has been published for the Tesla autopilot, which has recently been featured in the world press with its accidents. According to the statement from the US road safety agency, Tesla autopilot was involved in 273 accidents in just 10 months. Its closest competitor was Honda’s self-driving system with 90 accidents.
Tesla autopilot crashed 273 times in 10 months
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shared a report covering traffic accidents from July 2021 to May 2022. It did not go unnoticed in the report that Tesla was the clear winner. NHTSA announced that Tesla’s driver assistance system, called Full Self Driving, has crashed 273 times.
The new report published by NHTSA addressed the second level advanced driver assistance systems. Tesla, Honda, Subaru and Ford had the most crashed vehicles. However, the fact that Tesla was the first by a long distance aroused curiosity.
273 traffic accidents of Tesla autopilot were followed by Japanese company Honda. According to the second level advanced driver assistance system report, it was revealed that Honda played an active role in 90 accidents. Just behind Honda, Subaru (10 accidents), Ford (5 accidents) and Toyota (4 accidents) showed up, respectively.
“At the early stage of autonomous driving technology development and deployment, we see the value of having uniform accident reporting. Tesla’s crashes accounted for about 72 percent of the 392 accidents reported by automakers.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has advertised Tesla FSD many times over a period of about 10 months, stated that autopilot was used in approximately 830 thousand vehicles a few months ago. Elon Musk also argued that “Tesla is not at fault” in traffic accidents. According to Musk, Tesla FSD was not active during many traffic accidents.
NHTSA also stated that as a continuation of the report, autonomous vehicles were involved in a total of 130 incidents (accidents or minor damage collisions). At the beginning of these accidents was Waymo, an initiative of Google.
