iPadOS 16 brings driver support to iPads with M1 processors

Apple attracted attention by making many announcements at its developer conference WWDC 2022. Introducing new versions of iOS, macOS and iPadOS operating systems, which are among the most popular operating systems in the world, Apple attracted the most attention with iPadOS. Developed especially to convert iPads with M1 processors into computers, iPadOS 16 comes with many innovations.

Now to iPads it will be possible to install drivers

Apple brings the “DriverKit” application programming interface to M1 supported iPads with the new version of iPadOS. DriverKit was introduced by Apple as an interface that facilitates driver development for macOS devices in macOS Catalina and later. Drivers developed with DriverKit cannot access unnecessary system privileges by working in the user area instead of kernel extensions, thus providing a safe use.

With iPadOS 16, DriverKit will only work with USB, PCI and sound systems for now. DriverKit will only work on M1 supported iPads. However, on the macOS side, Apple Silicon supported drivers can be quickly ported to iPadOS. Drivers developed with DriverKit will be able to be downloaded from the App Store as you would an application, but they will have access to more system resources than standard applications. Apple, which markets iPads as laptop computers, has come one step closer to this claim. Select iPad models will now be comfortable to use with Thunderbolt sound cards or USB microphones. DriverKit will only work on the iPad Pro series with the M1 processor and the 2022 iPad Air. Thunderbolt devices will only work on the iPad Pro series with the M1 processor.
