Apple has taken a big step in making games more accessible by releasing an open-source plug-in for the Unity game engine that allows developers to take advantage of iOS’ helpful features. As unveiled in a video by Apple software engineer Eric Liang at the recent WWDC 2022 conference, the Apple Accessibility plugin comes with lots of little tips and tricks to make games much more inclusive.

First of all, VoiceOver, a screen reader tool that enables the reading of text on the screen for blind or low vision players using iOS, and also has the ability to activate special gestures for game controls, will be available in games.

There is also support for Key Control, allowing multiple external keys to be used for in-game controls. It also includes Dynamic Type Support, which gives developers the ability to change the size of the text in the game to match the text size set by the user in Settings.

Other capabilities include the ability to increase contrast for better visibility of interface elements or the power to reduce the transparency of the background by making the background opaque so that text stands out better.

Developers can obtain the Apple Accessibility plug-in from Github and use it for free.
