Social media platforms have increased their measures on the arms trade due to the recent increase in gun attacks. According to the report published by Gizmodo, Facebook users continue to sell guns easily despite increased controls.
Facebook fails to control gun sales
It is included in the published report details that Facebook users can sell an average of 10 times before their accounts are deleted due to the violation. Users who regularly call for violence must also receive 5 warnings to be removed from Facebook.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement, “We remove posts that violate gun sales policies as soon as we see them. We are removing most policy violators from our platform. If we detect serious violations in people with the potential to cause harm, we contact law enforcement.” made statements.
Underlining that the warning system has an impact on content publishing, Stone stated that users could not post for a long time after the first 2 warnings. Stone also claimed that news sites distorted Meta’s approach to such matters.
An anonymous source said that the number of complaints was so high that it rarely turned into a situation for Facebook to take action. It is worth remembering that Facebook allows gun sales and draws in site advertisements.
The Wall Street Journal report published in 2019 revealed that arms dealers are selling by listing their products as boxes. Sellers, using the logos of gun manufacturers, communicate directly with customers and provide details about their products.
