Smartphone cameras may become powerful enough to take better pictures than DSLR cameras in 2024. At least, that’s what Sony Semiconductor Solutions President and CEO Terusi Shimizu thinks, speaking at a business briefing last week.

This is a big claim, considering that smartphones will always have stricter space restrictions than DSLR cameras. But smartphone camera sensors are growing in size, and by 2024 it may be possible to reach a point where they can surpass the performance of DSLR camera sensors.

Some details of the news, first reported by Nikkei Japan, seem to have been lost in translation. Still, according to this news, Sony executive expects “smartphone photos will surpass the image quality of DSLR cameras in a few years” (probably in 2024).

Since smartphones are sold far more often than DSLR cameras, there may be a situation where smartphone cameras may become better than DSLR cameras for economic rather than technical reasons. However, if this expectation comes true and the smartphone camera market continues to move towards larger sensors, companies like Samsung will be equally affected by this change. Because Samsung, like Sony, is a major supplier of smartphone camera sensors.
