Can the camera for Apple Watch, the leading model of the smart watch market, be real? A new patent received by Apple is about the camera design that will be placed on the Apple Watch. The first use case, which the technology giant prioritizes, is to place the camera on the Digital Crown.

Apple Watch may have a camera

A new patent approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office indicates that the camera could be added to the side for future Apple Watch designs. Thanks to the built-in camera to be added to the Digital Crown, Apple will make it possible to take photos/videos with the Watch.

Images prepared with the patent revealed how the camera can be used while the Apple Watch is worn on the wrist. The user can also use the camera by detaching it from the smart watch strap. But this versatility has already raised privacy issues.

According to the description of the new patent, Apple does not only aim to take pictures/videos with the “camera watch”. The tech giant’s note shows that the camera flash can be multi-purpose. For example, Apple believes it can enable optical heart rate monitoring and other physiological sensing applications with the camera.

“An image sensor embedded in the Digital Crown can be configured to both capture a scene and detect motion via the dial.”

However, the patent did not include issues regarding whether the camera will always be on or how to lock it after it is removed from the wrist. Keeping the camera on the Apple Watch constantly open can have very dangerous consequences.

Camera thinking for the Apple Watch isn’t new, but images embedded in the Digital Crown have surfaced for the first time. Still, the ability to both take pictures and use the camera as an environmental sensor doesn’t seem to be available anytime soon.
