When the global chip crisis is added to all these, we can say that things got really messy. Even though the producers spent overtime to respond to the intense demand in this process, they realized that this was not possible after a while and lowered the shutters.
China has an important place in the automotive industry. In the country, which holds 11 percent of the sector in production, restrictions were returned in March due to the increasing coronavirus cases. While the factories of various companies, including Tesla, were closed, production resumed in April. Finally, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China announced the number of cars produced at the Tesla Shanghai factory after the bans.
Tesla Shanghai facility broke a production record with a limited number of employees
Tesla, one of the successful players in the automotive industry, has been on the agenda for a long time with its Shanghai factory. The facility was closed on March 28 due to increased cases. The quarantine, which lasted about three weeks, ended on April 18, and production resumed with a limited number of employees – 8,000 – and a single shift.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China announced that a total of 26 thousand Model 3 and Model Y were produced between April 19 and May 19 after the start of production at its Shanghai facilities. While this is not an all-time record, it means that the factory shipped 8,000 more cars than usual to Europe in just one month, with a limited number of employees and a single shift. 4 thousand 767 to Slovenia and 4 thousand 27 to Belgium
If the factory continues production like this, it is expected that the wholesale shipment will be in the range of 65 thousand to 71 thousand. Let us remind you that in the period covering September 2021 – March 2022, an average of 53,000 thousand vehicles were produced per month.
According to Reuters, daily production at Tesla’s Shanghai facility has been increased to 2,600 units as of today. In the previous period of the epidemic, the daily production capacity of the factory was about 1,000 units. After the increase in production capacity, Tesla’s weekly automobile production is expected to be close to 16 thousand.
