Experienced analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate leaks about Apple products, made a statement that fell like a bombshell. According to Kuo, Apple continues to work on a smartphone with a foldable screen. However, this smartphone will have a different feature than the models in the Samsung Galaxy Z series that have been released to date. Allegedly, Apple will use a colored electronic paper display (EPD) instead of an OLED display panel.

Most foldable smartphones have two separate screens, one inside and one outside. This causes battery life issues. The system that Apple is working on has the potential to eliminate this problem. Because EPD screens are very efficient products in terms of energy consumption.

Can EPD compete with OLED displays?

E Ink had recently announced its last EPD, which it named “Gallery 3”. Shares made by the company revealed that these screens do not perform as well as OLED. So much so that Gallery 3 can’t even keep up with the 60 Hz refresh rate. On the other hand; resolution and brightness level are also not at the desired level on these screens. However, E Ink continues to work on EPDs at full speed. In other words, the problems in question can be solved in the near future…

It is currently unknown when we will meet Apple’s iPhone models with foldable screens. However, Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest statement reveals that Apple can enter this industry by adopting a different approach. If E Ink’s work yields results and one day we see that EPDs can compete with OLED screens, we can witness that all the balances in the foldable screen phone industry have changed. But for now, we have no choice but to wait.
