Lotus has unveiled the 2024 Emeya electric supercar, a “four-door” sedan that has nearly 1,000 horsepower and accelerates to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. Lotus claims that its Grand Tourer (GT for short, high-performance cars designed for long distance travel) is “one of the fastest GTs in the world”, but before accepting this claim, it is necessary to take a look at some unbiased tests.

What kind of GT is Audi and Porsche rival Lotus Emeya?

Emeya draws attention at first glance with its top speed of 155 km/h and acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. When it enters production in early 2024, the Emeya is expected to compete with other luxury sports cars such as the Audi E-tron GT and Porsche Taycan. Lotus has yet to reveal key specs like battery capacity or range. However, there are certain guesses on this issue.

The company said the Emeya will be “generally similar” to Lotus’ first EV, the Eletre SUV, which has an EPA-estimated range of about 500 km. Given its dual-engine setup, this vehicle has a battery pack that likely exceeds 100kWh of usable power. More information on the Emeya’s battery and range is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

Lotus says the Emeya can accept up to 350kW DC fast charging; which means a range of about 150 km after about five minutes of charging. The powertrain is expected to produce up to 905 horsepower with 985 Nm of torque. The aerodynamic design is intended to increase range, improve efficiency and handling. The active rear diffuser will control the airflow under the car.

Speaking of airflow, it is stated that the 296 mm wide spoiler (100 mm wider than that of the Eletre) offers more than 215 kg of net downforce. This, combined with the active rear diffuser, ensures extremely stable handling at high speeds. In other words, Lotus is in front of us with a very advanced car in terms of aerodynamics.

Lotus, owned by Chinese Geely, is in the process of reinventing itself according to the electric age. Emeya is what Lotus plans to launch in the next four years; It will be the second of three new EVs: a sports car, a coupe-sedan and an SUV.

It is worth noting that the Eletre crossover SUV was officially introduced last year with a battery capacity of over 100 kWh and 600 horsepower. The switch to electricity appears to be a project aimed at improving Lotus’ weakening sales figures. Because the automaker sold only 576 cars in 2022, a 62 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The company also posted a loss of £145.1 million ($180.9 million) for the year and is considering cutting more than 200 jobs.
