The Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, announced that it has signed a new $ 9 billion cloud computing contract with Microsoft, Amazon, Google’s parent company Alphabet and Oracle.
The multi-billion project Joint Combat Cloud Capability, or Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC), as it was originally called, will replace the previously planned but subsequently canceled Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) project. The Pentagon’s JEDI project was only made with Microsoft, but with Amazon’s initiatives, the US Department of Defense canceled the project.
$9 billion deal from Pentagon
US Department of Defense Pentagon officials said the $9 billion JWCC contract will rapidly expand the cloud capabilities of all defense departments. The $9 billion contract is expected to be completed by June 2028 and will not be split equally between Google, Oracle, Microsoft and Amazon.
Instead, each company has been guaranteed $100,000 and will have to bid for the rest of the budget. Ministry of Defense officials announced that this will create price competition just like in the industry, and the offer with the best price and the best technology will be evaluated according to the mission requirements.
